Grief & Loss

Grief is a painful, empty feeling that can consume you when you have lost someone who is dear or something that is important to you. It can have an impact on your emotions, thoughts, behaviours, and bodily sensations.

Examples of losses that can make you feel grief & sadness:

  • Death of a loved one, whether sudden or expected
  • Break up of a significant relationship, separation, or divorce
  • Loss of job, corporate downsizing or forced retirement
  • Change in health or ability due to aging, illness or injury
  • Loss of an important role, such as becoming an “empty-nester”
  • Moving to a new home or country

The Loss Leaves a Gaping Hole in Your Life…

  • You feel angry and betrayed because you expected a different kind of future than the one you are facing.
  • You feel depressed and hopeless because this loss has shattered your life into a million little pieces.
  • You feel rejected and sad at the reality of being alone.
  • You withdraw from others and escape your pain with alcohol or drugs.
  • You keep thinking, “This isn’t fair! Why did this happen?”
  • Your body aches with exhaustion, heaviness, and sleeplessness.
